Born in the Philippines to a Dutch mother and a Filipino father, Martha Atienza has moved between both countries and cultures throughout her life. Motivated to present images based on her inter-cultural experiences and observations, she has recently ventured out into experimental narrative film-making after working with experimental video in previous years.
In 2006, she received her BFA from the Academy of Visual Arts and Design at the Aki in The Netherlands and also participated in the art program at the Kuvataideakatemia in Helsinki during the course of her studies. Her work has been exhibited internationally at experimental art spaces, galleries and festivals. In 2009, she joined the ‘Wednesday, I’m in Love’ residency program of Green Papaya in Manila, and in that same year, was nominated for the Ateneo Art Awards. She is currently working on her latest project ‘Gi Lubong ang Akong Pusod sa Dagat’ (My Navel is Buried in the Sea) which has brought her again to the Netherlands and the Philippines but also aboard the international vessels that work the route between the two nations.

Habagat by Martha Atienza (Philippines, 2009) 00:10:00
Filmed in a fishermen’s village on the island of Bantayan in the Philippines, Habagat – the only work in this series where the artist herself is not the performer in the video – alternately cuts between two young female performers, one dressed in red and the other in white, trying desperately to move towards the depths of the Visayan sea resisting the overwhelming currents of the oncoming waves. The tension depicted in the imagery is the artist’s reaction towards the judgement and discrimination felt in a traditional society as a woman, bearing witness of the struggle of women who want change.
